Show reveals giants of TV ads from Sally O”Brien to Guinness.
The revolution of the Irish advertising industry in the 70s will be documented in a new RTE production, Ireland”s Mad Men.
The show will feature some of the most iconic Irish adverts of the 20th century and the controversy which surrounded them.
The most infamous ad campaign of the 70s was the Harp advertisement entitled “Sally O”Brien and the way she might look at you”.
In this ad, an Irish man is working abroad in Saudi Arabia in the balmy heat, reminiscing of home, and his mind is cast back to “Sally O”Brien and the way she might look at you”.
The controversy arose when the actress playing this epitome of Irish beauty turned out to be English, which enraged the nation. It showed how powerful the advertising industry was getting and how it could stir up emotions in nation.more

Happy Labor Day..
Business mounted a multimillion-dollar advertising campaign against what it portrayed as an un-American assault on election by secret ballot. Labor insisted on the provision, even though it did not have the necessary 60 votes in the Senate.
The debate over health care intervened, and now labor finds itself in a fix, with the time for action this year running out. Having insisted for months — for years, actually — that the card-check provision is central to improving the law, it is belatedly backing off and defining success downward. ‘It may, it may not be’ part of the final legislation, the AFL-CIO”s president in waiting, Richard Trumka, told a breakfast gathering sponsored by the Christian Science Monitor last week. The new essentials, according to Trumka, are increased penalties, stepped-up enforcement and some kind of dispute resolution mechanism to make certain that contracts aren”t delayed indefinitely.more

TV facing “iTunes moment” warns Microsoft”s Ashley Highfield.
‘On current projections, we are three years away from the reach and the volume of online video being un-ignorably attractive to TV advertising buyers,’ he said. ‘We are two to three years away from having the ad sales systems and Barb-like measurement systems to enable really easy purchase across TV and web.’
To drive revenues from web video, media companies need to embrace controversial targeted advertising techniques, such as behavioural targeting based on users” web viewing habits, with the ad inventory going into an auction-style model similar to the system Google operates, according to Highfield.
He also suggested a possible solution to the thorny issue of getting broadband into rural areas in the UK after Lord Carter”s plan of a 6-a-year tax on landlines to raise the funds fell out of favour with new business minister Stephen Timms.more

The real “Mad” geniuses: New York”s real-life advertising superstars.
The philandering advertising genius of AMC”s ‘Mad Men’ returns tonight to strut the halls of the Sterling Cooper Agency in vintage Madison Avenue splendor.
But the ad world has come a long way since Draper”s many-martini lunches. Five contemporary ad creators prove that to survive in today”s market, Draper would have to get on Twitter, address increasingly specific minority and youth audiences, throw even sexier parties and - here”s the rub - try not to drink so much at work.

TechCrunch50 Partners Step Up with $1 million In Advertising For.
In July we said we would be giving away substantial amounts of advertising to promote the new startups and products launching at TechCrunch50 on September 14-15.
Today I”m pleased to announce that four of our key partners will be giving an aggregate of $1 million in advertising to TechCrunch50 companies. Facebook, Google (Youtube), Microsoft (Bing) and MySpace are all participating with substantial donations. We expect more partners to join shortly.
One of the cooler additional ideas was proposed by the Bing team. They”ll make tshirts that say ‘Bing Loves [company/logo]‘ and Bing staff will wear these tshirts, each one promoting a different TechCrunch50 startup, to various events and conferences they”ll attend throughout the year. They promise that the team will be familiar with the startup/product they”re promoting on their tshirts and be ready to talk about it when people ask.more

White House Says Little About Embattled Jones.
Fox News Channel host Glenn Beck all but declared war on Jones after a group the adviser founded in 2005, ColorofChange.org, led an advertising boycott against Beck”s show to protest his claim that Obama is a racist.
But reporters peppered the White House with questions about Jones after the blogger Gateway Pundit reported Thursday that in 2004 Jones had signed a petition circulated by the group 911Truth.org about the 9/11 attacks.
People familiar with the matter said he did not fully read the petition before signing, but the adviser apologized nevertheless on Thursday night.
‘In recent days some in the news media have reported on past statements I made before I joined the administration — some of which were made years ago. If I have offended anyone with statements I made in the past, I apologize.more
